COMMISSIONING A PORTRAIT  is just a phone call  or an email  away.  Creating an
oil portrait for you in the tradition of the Masters takes just a few enjoyable steps.
PORTRAIT PROCEDURE
(1)  CLIENT CONSULTATION & DEPOSIT:  A personalized client consultation is arranged
by appointment to discuss in detail the aspects of any portrait you desire to have painted.
Once an agreement  to proceed is reached, a 30% deposit is collected and your portrait is
scheduled. No other money is usually due until a portrait is completed.
(2)  INITIAL PREPARATION ACCOMPLISHED AT A SUBJECT'S LOCATION:
Mike prefers traveling  to a subject's location to meet with them and accomp[lsh
the initial preparation there in 1 to 3 days.
DAY ONE:  2 to 3 HOURS OF PHOTOGRAPHY & SKETCH WORK WITH A SUBJECT:
Prior to beginning any photography or sketch work, Mike prefers to first simply visit with
the person he's painting for a brief time.  Next, photographic reference images are taken
of the subject, either by the artist or under his direction, and initial sketch work may
proceed as well.  Often times while on location Mike will share a few of these reference
images with the client and/or subject in order to receive their valuable input and to help
them have a better visual idea of the design and pose of their portrait.
DAY TWO  /  DAY THREE:  PAINTING THE SUBJECT FROM LIFE FOR 2 to 3 HOURS:
Once a pose is decided upon, Mike then spends 2 to 3 hours painting color reference
studies of the subject from life.   In the tradition of the Masters, this aspect of his portrait
procedure --
spending a few hours with a subject painting them from life -- is
considered the single most important step in Mike's positive-realism approach to
bringing out the best in each subject he is commissioned to paint.  When a subject
is available, there is simply no substitute for painting them from life!
(3) MIKE RETURNS TO STUDIO TO PAINT WITHOUT THE PRESENCE OF THE SUBJECT:
Next, Mike returns to the studio, to assemble the acquired reference materials and to
arrange any additional lighting and props.  Actual work on an oil portrait in studio usually
takes 1-3 months.   In most cases Mike is able to complete the portrait without need of any
additional painting time with the subject.
(4)  WORKMANSHIP, PERMANENCY OF PIGMENTS, support and ground are of the
finest materials available.  Portraits are completed using Mike's established working method,
distinctive style, and proven creative talents.
(5)  COMPLETION, APPROVAL, &  FINAL PAYMENT:  The completion date and
delivery date of a portrait are dependent upon the size, number of subjects, and complexity
of the painting.  Most oil portraits of one subject up to a half-figure size of about 30" x 36",
that includes a subject's hands, are completed and ready for delivery approximately 2 to 4
months from the date that Mike first photographs and/or paints the subject from life.
Schedules and completion dates are as close to promised as humanly possible.
Evaluating a portrait:  When you commission a portrait, Mike's working method and individual
style assumes that your portrait will, most often, be viewed and evaluated from an
appropriate distance.
Approval & Final Payment:  Once a completed portrait is approved,
the remaining balance owed is usually due in full.
