JOE KITTINGER,
The Right Stuff
Oil on canvas,  24 x 18".  2010
This portrait was created and painted with
a positive-realism approach.  After making
a preliminary acrylic color compositional
study commissioned by Jeff Golding, Mike
and Jeff had the great honor of presenting
that study to Joe at the Executive Airport in
Orlando, Florida (pictured below).  It was at
the close of that meeting with Joe that
Joe told Mike of his desire to have a portrait
painted of him in the jump suit he wore
when he set 3 world records in August of
1960. That led to Mike later creating and
painting a
full length life size portrait of Joe
wearing that jump suit. (That portrait of Joe
is pictured on another page of this website.)
The oil portrait shown at right evolved from
the original study (shown below).  Mike
worked from a scarf given to him by Joe,
that he placed upon a shirt he had
purchased, that was then placed upon a
mannequin. Mike next set up the costumed
mannequin outside of his Central Florida
studio where he painted it
from life. He also
worked from photographic materials.
